Ithaca High School and Richland Center HS organizations “Youth4Change” hosted a breakfast for community leaders on Monday, March 6th, at the University of Wisconsin Platteville-Richland campus Wallace Student Center. Campus food service directors served a delicious and healthy breakfast. Sixty-two people attended the breakfast, including State Representative Tony Kurtz, State Senator Howard Marklein, Fire Chief Scott Gald, Sheriff Clay Porter, Chief Billy Jones, leaders from RC Health and Human Services, County Supervisors, Township Board members, School Board members, Treatment Providers, Guidance Counselors, Educators, School Administrators, the County Judge Lisa McDougal, parents, Symons Director, Pastors, and several others. RCHS Youth4Change Advisor Jeff Behrens said, “It was an outstanding event, an excellent opportunity for the students to develop presentation skills, network with decision-makers, and advocate for changes in the community. The Ithaca Y4C Advisors are Samantha Wilson and Heather Dickey. The presentation included the organization’s goals, accomplishments, and prevention process. Youth4Change highlighted two specific community changes: preventing the community’s acceptance of social hosting (underage group drinking on private property) and implementing a tobacco-free parks policy. “We know that nine in ten adults who develop a substance use disorder began using a substance while in their teens. This is newer information about how substance use disorders develop. The policy-based strategies we recommend support the research and can effectively save our community from the harm and cost of substance use treatment.” said RCHS Y4C leader Kailey Hockerman. Meeting attendees posted their questions, ideas, and ways to commit to action on wall posters. The information will be compiled and followed up.

APRIL IS NATIONAL ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH! Join us as we work to raise awareness about alcohol-related harms and the importance of strong alcohol policies. Rest easier. If you live in a state with more alcohol safeguards – like strong policies limiting where, when and how alcohol is sold - you are less likely to experience aggression-related harms from someone else’s drinking. Second-hand harms from alcohol are real.

Under the guidance of the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture, CCC employees fought forest fires, planted trees, cleared and maintained access roads, re-seeded grazing lands and implemented soil-erosion controls. They built wildlife refuges, fish-rearing facilities, water storage basins and animal shelters. To encourage citizens to get out and enjoy America's natural resources, FDR authorized the CCC to build bridges and campground facilities. From 1933 to 1942, the CCC employed over 3 million men. This Day in History: 1968: Just after 6 p.m. on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. is fatally shot while standing on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The civil rights leader was in Memphis to support a sanitation workers’ strike. In the months before his assassination, Martin Luther King became increasingly concerned with the problem of economic inequality in America. He organized a Poor People’s Campaign to focus on the issue, including a march on Washington, and in March 1968 traveled to Memphis in support of poorly treated African-American sanitation workers. On March 28, a workers’ protest march led by King ended in violence and the death of an African American teenager. King left the city but vowed to return in early April to lead another demonstration. This Day in History: 1860 On April 3, 1860, the first Pony Express mail, traveling by horse and rider relay teams, simultaneously leaves St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider and mail packet completed the approximately 1,800-mile journey and arrived in Sacramento, beating the eastbound packet’s arrival in St. Joseph by two days and setting a new standard for speedy mail delivery. Although ultimately short-lived and unprofitable, the Pony Express captivated America’s imagination and helped win federal aid for a more economical overland postal system. It also contributed to the economy of the towns on its route and served the mail-service needs of the American West in the days before the telegraph or an efficient transcontinental railroad.
