This day in history: At 2:10 p.m. on December 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers comprising Flight 19 take off from the Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station in Florida. They never returned. Although naval officials maintained that the remains of the six aircraft and 27 men were not found because stormy weather destroyed the evidence, the story of the “Lost Squadron” helped cement the legend of the Bermuda Triangle, an area of the Atlantic Ocean where ships and aircraft are said to disappear without a trace. The Bermuda Triangle is said to stretch from the southern U.S. coast across to Bermuda and down to the Atlantic coast of Cuba and Santo Domingo. Today we recognize the generosity of some of our area's finest. Longtime residents of Willow Township, Fred and Hazel Pauls helped establish the Ithaca School Forest through the guidance of the Willow Community Foundation. The Ithaca School Forest, formerly Fred and Hazel's farm, is now owned by the Willow Community Foundation. The two entities (School and Foundation) entered into an agreement, in December of 2014, designating that the property could be used as a School Forest. The property is composed of 233 acres in Willow Township, and the topography is typical of the driftless area of Wisconsin, with steep hillsides, deep valleys and an occasional rock outcropping. Over the years, students have been guided to explore and enjoy this forest. Stay tuned for their most recent experience!
