Good luck to the Ithaca Horse Team as you compete Friday-Sunday at the State WIHA Competition. Ithaca team members are: Talena Sprecher, Josie Laue, Arianna Louis, Maggie Kershner, Ellie Otto, Annabeth Sprecher. The team is coached by Jenny Laue.
High school wrestlers: poster pictures and individual pictures will be taken this Thursday at 6:00. All returning wrestlers need to be present to be included on the poster and any new wrestlers need to be present if they want individual pictures. From Coach Clary.

Ithaca choirs will present a variety show titled "Screen Time" on Friday, November 11th at 7pm in the community gym. High school students will have a dress rehearsal at 6pm Thursday the 10th. Costumes for all choirs will be finalized this week; be on the lookout for a note home so you can help your student be ready. Looking forward to a fun show!

This Day in History: Oct 25 1825-Erie Canal opens. Work began on the waterway in 1817. Teams of oxen plowed the ground, but for the most part the work was done by immigrants, among them Irish diggers who had to rely on primitive tools. They were paid $10 a month, and barrels of whisky were placed along the canal route as encouragement. West of Troy, 83 canal locks were built to accommodate the more than 500-foot rise in elevation. After more than two years of digging, the 363-mile Erie Canal from Albany to Buffalo, was opened on October 26, 1825, by Governor Clinton.

This Day in History On October 25, 1944, during the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, the Japanese deploy kamikaze ("divine wind") bombers against American warships for the first time. It will prove costly-to both sides. This decision to employ suicide bombers against the American fleet at Leyte, an island of the Philippines, was based on the failure of conventional naval and aerial engagements to stop the American offensive. Declared Japanese naval Capt. Motoharu Okamura: "I firmly believe that the only way to swing the war in our favor is to resort to crash-dive attacks with our planes.... There will be more than enough volunteers for this chance to save our country."

This Day in History: On October 24, 1901, a 63-year-old schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor became the first person to successfully take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Between 1901 and 1995, 15 people went over the falls; 10 of them survived. Among those who died were Jesse Sharp, who took the plunge in a kayak in 1990, and Robert Overcracker, who used a jet ski in 1995. No matter the method, going over Niagara Falls is illegal, and survivors face charges and stiff fines on either side of the border.

For the second year in a row, Ithaca's Kaylee Peterson has qualified for State in Division 2 Girls Cross Country! Kaylee has had an incredible season, and put together her best race when it counted most by placing 3rd out of 96 runners at Sectionals. She will race with 150 of the best runners in the state this Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids at The Ridges Golf Course at 12:40pm. Good luck Kaylee!

Ithaca is seeking teaching and support professional (paraprofessional) substitutes. If you are interested, contact Brooke Hackl at brooke.hackl@ithaca.k12.wi.us or phone 608-585-2512. Substitute training is required by the state of Wisconsin, but we will put you in contact with CESA staff to meet that requirement. The Ithaca District is also seeking a long-term middle school science substitute from October 31st through the end of January. Contact HR about these opportunities and become part of the Ithaca Team!
