Word of the Day: Lyrical Something described as lyrical, adjective, has an artistically beautiful or expressive quality, often one that is reminiscent of song. The most time-honored political speeches in the nation’s history, regardless of subject, all tend to share an elegant, lyrical quality that makes them memorable across the ages.
This Day in History: 1878-Silver dollars made legal. Today, the value of American money is essentially secured by faith in the stability of the government, but during the 19th century, money was generally backed by actual deposits of silver and gold, the so-called “bimetallic standard.” The U.S. also minted both gold and silver coins. With the backing of powerful western mining interests, Bland secured passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which became law on this day in 1878. Although the act did not provide for a return to the old policy of unlimited silver coinage, it did require the U.S. Treasury to resume purchasing silver and minting silver dollars as legal tender.

Word of the Day: Divest To divest something valuable, such as property or stocks, is to sell it. Similarly, to divest yourself of something valuable is to sell it or give it away. And if you divest someone or something of something, you take that thing away from them, or otherwise cause them to lose it or give it up. I suppose it really is time to divest the Christmas tree of its ornaments, and stow it all away.
This Day in History: On February 15, 2003, millions of people across over 600 cities worldwide take to the streets to protest the impending invasion of Iraq. On February 15th, National Wisconsin Day recognizes The Badger State. Rich in copper, lead, forest and fertile farmland, Wisconsin became the 30th state on May 29, 1848. In 1634, French explorer Jean Nicolet was the first European to reach Wisconsin while seeking a Northwest passage to China. A mining boom, not fur trading, led to the nickname The Badger State. The miners burrowed into the hillsides much like badgers for shelter. The first wave of settlers to the area also began the uprooting of the Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Chippewa and other indigenous people.

Word of the Day: Besotted, adjective, means "loving someone or something so much that you cannot think clearly." // He was so besotted with his classmate that he began to make errors in his work.
This Day in History: On February 14, around the year 270 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, is said to have been executed. Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages in secret. Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270. Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine." For his great service, Valentine was named a saint after his death.
