The Ithaca High School Forensics team was honored recently for their outstanding performances during the 2021 WHSFA State Festival. Our Forensics program was awarded the distinguished Excellence in Speech Award for performing in the top 5% of all state festival competitors. Led by 8 perfect scores earning Gold, our team was further bolstered by earning 5 Silver medals, 4 Bronze medals, and 2 small Bronze medals. Every member of the Ithaca team qualified for the state festival this season. This year the team was led by coaches Louise Murphey, Juli Thompson, and Emily Zorea. Many challenges this season pushed performers and coaches outside of their comfort zone. It may seem that public speaking would be easier when recording in an empty room without an audience, however our performers will tell you that having no audience presents other challenges. Learning and honing tech skills to record performances also changed the forensics experience. The Ithaca Forensics team overcame all those challenges and turned in some of the best performances in the state. Congratulations to all our performers and coaches on such an amazing accomplishment. Forensics may be an individual activity, but the efforts of the entire team made earning this award possible. A virtual standing ovation goes out to Mrs. Louise Murphey. Under her leadership, the Ithaca Forensics program has not just flourished, but has promoted quality public speaking. Her dedication for so many years has made this award possible. She pushes students to work harder than they thought they could, perform better than they thought they could, and held students to high standards that they did know they were capable of. She believed in each of her performers over the years, and they carry that confidence with them even long after they leave her leadership. Thank you, Mrs. Murphey, and congratulations on accomplishing such an honor in earning this award along with your performers.
