This Day in History: 1859-At Port Said, Egypt, ground is broken for the Suez Canal, an artificial waterway intended to stretch 101 miles across the isthmus of Suez and connect the Mediterranean and the Red seas. Word of the day: To gerrymander, verb, is to divide a state, school district, etc. into political units or election districts that give one group or political party an unfair advantage. When politicians gerrymander, stretching their districts into absurd shapes just to maintain power, citizens often suffer the negative consequences.
This Day in History: Wisconsin Public School Observance Day, marking the anniversary of Earth Day (April 22, 1970) 1863–The Union army issued General Orders No. 100, which provided a code of conduct for Federal soldiers and officers when dealing with Confederate prisoners and civilians. The orders established policies for, among other things, the treatment of prisoners, exchanges, and flags of truce. There was no document like it in the world at the time, and other countries soon adopted the code. It became the standard for international military law, and the Germans adopted it by 1870. The code was borrowed by many European nations, and its influence can be seen on the Geneva Convention.

Word of the day: To infantilize, verb, someone is to treat them as though they are an infant—in other words, to treat them as helpless, immature, or as one who lacks adult agency. Infantilizing children by shielding them from taking risks can have detrimental effects on their growth and well-being.
This Day in History: The yellow ribbon has long been a symbol of support for absent or missing loved ones. There are some who believe that the tradition of the yellow ribbon dates back as far as the Civil War era, when a yellow ribbon in a woman's hair indicated that she was "taken" by man who was absent due to service in the United States Army Cavalry. But research by professional folklorists has found no evidence to support that story. The Library of Congress itself traces the cultural ubiquity of this powerful symbol to the well-known song by Tony Orlando and Dawn: "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree," which topped the U.S. pop charts on April 21, 1973.

Ithaca High School partners with CESA 3 and Southwest Technical College to offer career exploration and skill-building through our Youth Apprenticeship Program. Recently students in the Beginning Farm Management (BFM) course were hosted by McFarlane's in Sauk City, UW-Madison Sheep Program in Arlington, and Statz Brothers Dairy in Marshall. Ithaca students that participated in this field trip were juniors Logan Anderson, Caleb Birkrem, Josie Laue, Darin Nelson, and Landon Thompson.
Students were greeted by a team of representatives at McFarlane and were able to weld, plasma cut, see the production floor, retail area, talk with service technicians and operate some of the world’s most technologically advanced farm equipment.
At the UW-Sheep Research Facility, Manager Todd Taylor, explained the history and importance of the site, took us through the facility, and explained a few of the research projects on the farm.
Joe Statz, part owner of Statz Brothers, Inc. farms over 9,000 acres and milks 4,700 cows. Students were able to see a double 50 milking parlor, walk across a vent barn, see a manure digester and solid separator operate, and see a state-of-the-art feed mixing center. Todd Follendorf, Coboss Consulting Inc., who works with the Statz Farm animal nutrition, met us to discuss the importance of dairy nutrition, minimizing feed shrink and discuss feeding efficiencies on a large herd.
A special thank you to all the groups hosting to make a great day possible!
The group included high school juniors and seniors from across southwest Wisconsin. They are enrolled in a three-credit BFM class that can transfer to an on-campus program if they decide to join Southwest Tech after high school. All of the students are also part of the CESA Youth Apprenticeship program and working in agriculture or a business career. SWTC is partnered with CESA #3, which pays all the tuition cost for the students that enroll in the BFM class. Visit www.swtc.edu/fbpm to learn more about BFM.
Information regarding the Youth Apprenticeship Program through Ithaca High School can be obtained by contacting Monica Kershner, Youth Apprenticships Career Coach monica.kershner@ithaca.k12.wi.us

Word of the day: Recuse, verb, means “to disqualify (oneself) as judge in a particular case.” More broadly, it can also mean “to remove (oneself) from participation to avoid a conflict of interest.” Judge decided to recuse herself from the case due to the nature of her relationship with the plaintiff's family.
This Day in History: Wisconsin Public School Observance Day to mark the date in 1775 when shots were fired in Lexington, beginning of the Revolutionary War. April 19, 1775: At about 5 a.m., 700 British troops, on a mission to capture Patriot leaders and seize a Patriot arsenal, march into Lexington to find 77 armed minutemen under Captain John Parker waiting for them on the town’s common green. British Major John Pitcairn ordered the outnumbered Patriots to disperse, and after a moment’s hesitation the Americans began to drift off the green. Suddenly, a shot was fired from an undetermined gun, and a cloud of musket smoke soon covered the green. When the brief Battle of Lexington ended, eight Americans lay dead or dying and 10 others were wounded. Only one British soldier was injured, but the American Revolution had begun.
