Today we recognize the generosity of some of our area's finest. Longtime residents of Willow Township, Fred and Hazel Pauls helped establish the Ithaca School Forest through the guidance of the Willow Community Foundation. The Ithaca School Forest, formerly Fred and Hazel's farm, is now owned by the Willow Community Foundation. The two entities (School and Foundation) entered into an agreement, in December of 2014, designating that the property could be used as a School Forest. The property is composed of 233 acres in Willow Township, and the topography is typical of the driftless area of Wisconsin, with steep hillsides, deep valleys and an occasional rock outcropping. Over the years, students have been guided to explore and enjoy this forest. Stay tuned for their most recent experience!

Word of the Day: Detritus, noun, debris—the pieces that remain when something breaks, falls apart, or is destroyed. On her trip to Central America, she was fascinated by how much people have learned from the detritus of ancient civilizations.
This day in history: 1955: In Montgomery, Alabama on December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks is jailed for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man, a violation of the city’s racial segregation laws. The successful Montgomery Bus Boycott, organized by a young Baptist minister named Martin Luther King Jr., followed Park’s historic act of civil disobedience.

Word of the Day: Abnegate "to deny or renounce" in contexts relating to responsibility: if you abnegate your responsibilities, you deny them and refuse to do what those responsibilities require. The letter outlined ways in which the mayor had abnegated his responsibilities to the city's employees.
This day in history: On November 29, 1942, coffee joins the list of items rationed in the United States. Despite record coffee production in Latin American countries, the growing demand for the bean from both military and civilian sources, and the demands placed on shipping, which was needed for other purposes, required the limiting of its availability. Scarcity or shortages were rarely the reason for rationing during the war. Rationing was generally employed for two reasons: (1) to guarantee a fair distribution of resources and foodstuffs to all citizens; and (2) to give priority to military use for certain raw materials, given the present emergency.
