WORD OF THE DAY:
Glower: to look or stare with sullen annoyance or anger. Kelly glowered at me after I sided with Brenda in their dispute about the chores.
THIS DAY IN HISTORY: The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes,” is ratified by the requisite number of states on January 16, 1919. The movement for the prohibition of alcohol began in the early 19th century, when Americans concerned about the adverse effects of drinking began forming temperance societies. Nine months after Prohibition's ratification, Congress passed the Volstead Act, or National Prohibition Act, over President Woodrow Wilson's veto. One year and a day after its ratification, prohibition went into effect—on January 17, 1920—and the nation became officially dry. Despite a vigorous effort by law-enforcement agencies, the Volstead Act failed to prevent the large-scale distribution of alcoholic beverages, and organized crime flourished in America. In 1933, the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was passed and ratified, repealing prohibition.

On January 10, 2024, Ithaca's 4th Grade class Zoomed with Albert LeBeau, the Cultural Resources Program Manager for Effigy Mounds National Monument. At Ithaca, 4th grade students practice Library research skills by learning about Wisconsin history. An essential learning skill for 4th graders in Library class is to establish connections with other learners and experts. To prepare for their Zoom meeting, students learned about the Effigy Mounds in Library class and discussed what these mounds represent for our area's history. Students also prepared their own questions to ask Mr. LeBeau during the Zoom session.

WORD OF THE DAY: Ubiquitous: a synonym of widespread and describes things that are actually, or seemingly, seen or encountered everywhere. Though they were once a status symbol reserved only for those with considerable means, smartphones are now a ubiquitous technology.
THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. is born in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of a Baptist minister. King received a doctorate degree in theology and in 1955 helped organize the first major protest of the African American civil rights movement: the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott. Influenced by Mohandas Gandhi, he advocated civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance to segregation in the South. The peaceful protests he led throughout the American South were often met with violence, but King and his followers persisted, and the movement gained momentum.
