Word of the Day: envisage is to picture something in your mind, or to view or regard something in a particular way. She envisages many positive changes and opportunities in the New Year. This day in history: On January 10, 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil, coating the landscape for hundreds of feet and signaling the advent of the American oil industry. The geyser was discovered at a depth of over 1,000 feet, flowed at an initial rate of approximately 100,000 barrels a day and took nine days to cap. Following the discovery, petroleum, which until that time had been used in the U.S. primarily as a lubricant and in kerosene for lamps, would become the main fuel source for new inventions such as cars and airplanes; coal-powered forms of transportation including ships and trains would also convert to the liquid fuel. Word of the Day: A luminaria is a lantern—traditionally used in Christmas celebrations in the southwestern U.S. that typically consists of a candle (or its electric analogue) set in sand inside a paper bag. Luminaria is also broadly used to refer to a similar lantern lit for other occasions, such as memorials or weddings. One of Anna’s favorite Christmas Eve traditions is lighting luminaria with her family to line their driveway in a festive display. This day in history: On January 8, 1867, African American men gain the right to vote in the District of Columbia despite the veto of its most powerful resident, President Andrew Johnson. Word of the Day: Nobby is a synonym of chic and typically describes people and things that are cleverly stylish. The word is sometimes disapproving in modern use. The restaurant was a bit too nobby for my tastes, but I did enjoy the food. This day in history: On January 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers began excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages. Following the Gold Rush boom that began in 1849, speculators realized the land north of San Francisco Bay would increase in value in direct proportion to its accessibility to the city. Soon, a plan was hatched to build a bridge that would span the Golden Gate, a narrow, 400-foot deep strait that serves as the mouth of the San Francisco Bay, connecting the San Francisco Peninsula with the southern end of Marin County. For the past three decades, the Ithaca high school kids have hosted the Passage Food Drive every Christmas. Passages is a non profit facility in Richland County that helps women in domestic abuse situations. In the beginning, the senior class hosted the food drive and over time the Ithaca Student Council took over the duties of organizing the fund raiser. This year, the Ithaca Student Council paired up council members with elementary and middle school classes in the spirit of competition and for a goal in the end, a Pizza Hut party for the winning class. This year, the 4th grade group with their partners, Kailey Newkirk, Tristen Peterson, and Maggie Kershner won the contest by collecting 22 boxes for their grade. A total of 75 boxes were collected and donated to Passage on December 22nd. * Pictured left to right.
