Happy Earth Day! Senator Gaylord Nelson, a junior senator from Wisconsin, had long been concerned about the deteriorating environment in the United States. Then in January 1969, he and many others witnessed the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson wanted to infuse the energy of student anti-war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a teach-in on college campuses to the national media, and persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair. They recruited Denis Hayes, a young activist, to organize the campus teach-ins and they choose April 22, a weekday falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, to maximize the greatest student participation. Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes. Celebrate Earth Day in your own way! https://youtu.be/sYsZCtugbnE

Attention all STAFF: Reminder to fill out the google form sent to you by Emma Schoen for teacher appreciation week. Thank you! This week is National Student Leadership week. The theme this year is “Leadership Unlimited”. Being a student leader is advantageous because of the skills you gain from being a leader. When being a leader, not only are you encouraging others, but you are also learning about yourself. You are gaining soft skills that aren’t teachable and will benefit you throughout the course of your life. For example, teamwork, work-ethic, reliability, and responsibility. Many companies and organizations look for leaders among applicants. If you are able to list the times you were a leader, you’ll have a better chance of getting that job. Consider joining the many groups Ithaca has to offer. Actively participate by running for the officer positions. Become a leader. April 19, 1775-- At about 5 a.m., 700 British troops, on a mission to capture Patriot leaders and seize a Patriot arsenal, marched into Lexington to find 77 armed minutemen under Captain John Parker waiting for them on the town’s common green. Suddenly, a shot was fired from an undetermined gun, and a cloud of musket smoke soon covered the green. When the brief Battle of Lexington ended, eight Americans lay dead or dying and 10 others were wounded. Only one British soldier was injured, but the American Revolution had begun. Hello Ithaca families, This email is to remind parents that we will be using a behavioral screener for our Juniors:  mySAEBRS includes 20 items and can be completed by students in grades 2 through 12. Students complete mySAEBRS by logging into the FastBridge system on a computer or tablet device with a headset for audio directions. Students indicate how frequently they have displayed each behavior within the previous month, by selecting “Never,” “Sometimes,” “Often,” and “Almost Always.” Social Behaviors:  Behaviors related to age-appropriate relationships with peers and adults.Academic Behaviors:  Behaviors related to preparation, participation, and benefit from academic instruction.Emotional Problems:  Behaviors related to regulating internal states, adapting to change, and responding to stressful/challenging events. This is a new screener for Ithaca schools, and we hope that we can use the information to add programming based on the needs of the students.  We completed, or will soon complete this for grades 4-6.  Thank you, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

17 Ithaca students participated in the FBLA virtual Regional Leadership Conference on Saturday, February 6 that was hosted by Region IV Vice President, Audrey Newkirk, a senior at Ithaca High School. We're thrilled to announce that 10 of these students are advancing to the FBLA State Leadership Conference on April 12 and 3 students qualified as alternates. Students who won their event are Erica Steinmetz for Introduction to Business Procedures and the team of Emma Schoen and Will Burnley in Broadcast Journalism. Earning 2nd place are the teams of Audrey Newkirk and Ryan Lee in Business Ethics, Emma Coy and Elise Newkirk in Introduction to Business Procedures and Carissa Willis' Job Interview. Josie Laue and Lexi Stowell received a 3rd place award for their Introduction to Social Media Strategy project. The three students who will be alternates for their events at the State Leadership Conference are Talena Sprecher in Agribusiness, Sawyer Simpson for Impromptu Speaking and Alivya Young in Introduction to Event Planning. Congratulations to the FBLA members on their hard work preparing for their events and for how well the Ithaca community was represented. Thank you to everyone who supported the students and helped us prepare for the conference and judged events. This was truly a community effort and we couldn't have done it without your help. Audrey and Mrs. Burnley were bolstered by our immediate and extended families and are grateful for all of their hard work and patience. We especially want to thank Mr. Hess! We couldn't have pulled off this virtual event without your guidance and creative ideas. Having a virtual Leadership Conference was not what Audrey signed up for when she ran for the Region 4 VP, but she demonstrated resilience, determination, imagination and great flexibility. Congratulations Audrey on a wonderful and unique RLC! Good luck to all of the students who qualified for the State Leadership Conference next week.
