This Date in History: May 18, 1980 At 8:32 a.m. PDT, Mount St. Helens, a volcanic peak in southwestern Washington, suffers a massive eruption, killing 57 people and devastating some 210 square miles of wilderness. On the morning of May 18, Mount St. Helens was shaken by an earthquake of about 5.0 magnitude, and the entire north side of the summit began to slide down the mountain. The giant landslide of rock and ice, one of the largest recorded in history, was followed and overtaken by an enormous explosion of steam and volcanic gases, which surged northward along the ground at high speed. The lateral blast stripped trees from most hill slopes within six miles of the volcano and leveled nearly all vegetation for as far as 12 miles away. Approximately 10 million trees were felled by the blast.

The Junior and Senior Prom was held on Saturday night. The Senior Prom King and Queen was Ryan Lee and Audrey Newkirk. The Junior Prom King and Queen was Max Koch and Emma Schoen. Thank you to all that attended. Also, thank you to the Juniors and Seniors who decorated and also stayed to clean up the gym after the dance. Thank you to Mr. Lechnir, Mr. Klang and Mr. Mezzera for chaperoning the dance. We appreciated your help! Mrs. Behrens, Ms. Durkin, and Mrs. Boland.

This Date in History: May 17, 1954 In a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down an unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin. In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled in Plessy v. Ferguson that "separate but equal" accommodations in railroad cars conformed to the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. That ruling was used to justify segregating all public facilities, including elementary schools. However, in the case of Linda Brown, the white school she attempted to attend was far superior to her Black alternative and miles closer to her home.

Summer break doesn't mean the end of reading! Mrs. Zorea and Mrs. Thompson are excited to resume the popular Summer Library Check Out program. Please look through your backpacks, lockers, home libraries, under your bed, or in your closets for outstanding library books to help make as many books available to readers for summer as possible. With a signed and returned permission form (one per student), students can check out up to 12 books to enjoy over the summer. Read the information and submit the form attached to participate. This is open to students of all ages!
Ithaca High School is proud to celebrate our students during our High School Awards Ceremony. This event will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021, during 7th and 8th hours (1:21pm until 2:52pm) in the High School gym. The ceremony is open only to students and staff, but will be LIVE STREAMED on the school's YouTube channel!

Congratulations to Talena Sprecher for qualifying for State in the FFA Creed contest. Talena is the FIRST -Ever Ithaca FFA Member to qualify in a State level FFA Speaking contest. Talena also qualified for State in three different Proficiency areas for her projects. Talena will be participating at the State FFA Convention in July.
Prom will be held on Saturday, May 15, 8:00 - 11:30 pm, in the high school gym. Cost is $10 per person. This is a formal event and no jeans will be allowed to be worn. Once a student leaves the dance, they will not be allowed back in. Masks are required to be worn. Due to Covid, only the parents of the Juniors and Seniors will be allowed to attend the grand march at 9:30. Parents will wait in the Commons until their child's class is featured. Once in the gym, parents will be allowed to stay only as long as the grand march lasts and then will be required to leave the building. 20 minutes is the maximum amount of time allowed for the parent’s to attend.

This Date in History: On May 11, 1934, a massive storm sent millions of tons of topsoil flying from across the parched Great Plains region of the United States. At the time the Great Plains were settled in the mid-1800s, the land was covered by prairie grass. By the early 20th century, however, farmers had plowed under much of the grass to create fields. The U.S. entry into World War I in 1917 caused a great need for wheat, plowing under more and more grassland with the newly invented tractor. That year, a severe drought spread across the region. Wind began to carry dust from the over-plowed and over-grazed lands. The dust storms forced thousands of families from Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas and New Mexico to uproot and migrate to California, where they were derisively known as “Okies”—no matter which state they were from. This Date in History: On May 7, 1824, Ludwig van Beethoven’s ninth and final symphony debuts at Vienna’s Theater am Kärntnertor. The Ninth Symphony required the largest orchestra ever employed by Beethoven, and was unusual at the time for its use of voices in addition to instruments. Beethoven hand-picked two young singers, 18-year-old Henriette Sontag and 20-year-old Caroline Unger, for the soprano and alto parts. He stood on stage and appeared to conduct the orchestra when the Ninth debuted, although due to his deafness the players were instructed to ignore the composer and instead follow Michael Umlauf, the actual conductor.

Do you know where your library books are? The LMC is gearing up for the Summer Library Check Out, and we're hoping you can check at home for some missing library books.
To help give you some ideas, check out the top 10 places to find your child’s lost library books:
1. Between the bed and the wall (even I fall asleep reading)
2. Between the bed and the other wall (so I guess that's the floor, but you get it)
3. Shoved in the back of the bookcase (usually flat against the back, especially for small books)
4. Underneath the couch (keeping them handy!)
5. The bathroom (obvious reasons)
6. In the car (the book wanted to go on a trip!)
7. Inside the dresser (slid in with the pile of socks?)
8. Under the bed (it was originally in the #2 spot, but then got kicked)
9. Between the sheets (usually found at the foot of the bed)
10. On the very bottom of the toybox!!

Last night over 50 students gathered in memory of Mason. We shared readings, poems and expressed how much he will be missed. We whispered peace, when we didn't know the words to speak. We cried many tears but also smiled and laughed. We found another level of connection with each other and with Mason. We are grateful for the memories and will hold onto them forever. 💙🕊

This Date in History: On May 6, 1940, John Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novel The Grapes of Wrath.The book traces the fictional Joad family of Oklahoma as they lose their family farm and move to California in search of a better life. They encounter only more difficulties and a downward slide into poverty. The book combines simple, plain-spoken language and a compelling plot with rich description. One of Steinbeck’s most effective works of social commentary, the novel also wonthe National Book Award.

Forensics students, please note a date change for our awards celebration. We will celebrate next week on Tuesday, May 11th during ATTACK time in the LMC. Please be prompt in arriving, as we have plenty of celebrating to do.
High School Students: If you are bringing a guest to Prom, that is not an Ithaca student, you must sign them up on the sheet located in the office by Friday, May 14th.
On behalf of the sophomore class...we invite the high school students & staff for a memorial for Mason. This will be this evening (Wednesday) from 8:00-9:00pm (following GIG) at the baseball diamond. We will share some music, memories, poems and readings. We will then light candles in his memory together. They say: “It’s ok to smile while your heart is still in pieces of grief and confusion. Moments of being together might be the only glue that keeps you together.” We hope you will join us Wednesday evening for a gathering in memory of our classmate, Mason.

The Middle School FBLA placed in the top 10 in the Nationwide Intuit DEI Challenge open to high school and middle school level groups. This was their first competition. Great job.

The Ithaca High School Forensics team was honored recently for their outstanding performances during the 2021 WHSFA State Festival. Our Forensics program was awarded the distinguished Excellence in Speech Award for performing in the top 5% of all state festival competitors. Led by 8 perfect scores earning Gold, the team was further bolstered by earning 5 Silver medals, 4 Bronze medals, and 2 small Bronze medals. Every team member qualified for the state festival this season. This year the team was led by coaches Louise Murphey, Juli Thompson, and Emily Zorea.

The sophomore class is inviting anyone who would like to contribute to a collection for Mason Fenton's parents. A jar labeled for this purpose will be located in the office on the counter each day until the end of the day on Tuesday. The donations will be given on behalf of Ithaca Schools by the sophomore class.
