This Day in History: Supreme Court declares desegregation busing constitutional On April 20, 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously declares busing for the purposes of desegregation to be constitutional. The decision in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education settled the constitutional question and allowed the widespread implementation of busing, which remained controversial over the next decade.

In Library class, Kindergarten students learned the story of "The Three Pigs." This week, Kindergarten students completed research and built their own houses of straws, sticks, and bricks. They tested their hypothesis that the houses of bricks would be the strongest and were surprised to find that houses of sticks or straws can also be surprisingly sturdy against Kindergarten "huffs and puffs." Good things are happening in the Library!

This Day in History: Oklahoma City bombing Just after 9 a.m. on April 19, 1995, a massive truck bomb explodes outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The blast collapsed the north face of the nine-story building, instantly killing more than 100 people and trapping dozens more in the rubble. Emergency crews raced to Oklahoma City from across the country, and when the rescue effort finally ended two weeks later the death toll stood at 168 people killed, including 19 young children who were in the building’s day-care center at the time of the blast.

Congratulations to Talena Sprecher on her awards for her VFW essay on America, where do we go from here? Talena won the high school essay contest on the local level, district level and placed 2nd at the State level earning her a scholarship. Great job representing Ithaca!

This Day in History: The Great San Francisco Earthquake topples buildings, killing thousands On April 18, 1906, at 5:13 a.m., an earthquake estimated at close to 8.0 on the Richter scale strikes San Francisco, California, killing an estimated 3,000 people as it topples numerous buildings. The quake was caused by a slip of the San Andreas Fault over a segment about 275 miles long, and shock waves could be felt from southern Oregon down to Los Angeles.

This Day in History: John Wilkes Booth shoots Abraham Lincoln President Abraham Lincoln is shot in the head at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865. The assassin, actor John Wilkes Booth, shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis! (Ever thus to tyrants!) The South is avenged,” as he jumped onto the stage and fled on horseback. Lincoln died the next morning.

Your generosity blew away the goal Versiti had set of 36 donations with 49 DONATIONS! There were 33 whole blood donations and 16 dual red cell donations. This is enough blood products to SAVE UP TO 115 LIVES. Thank you so much for making this such a special event. We are so grateful for all of your hard work and for Ben and the Huebsch family for sharing their story.




Congratulations to all Ithaca High School Forensics students! The results from the state contest on Friday are something to be very proud of.
Performers earning perfect scores and a Critic’s Choice Award Gold medal are: Brooklynn Granger, Emma Schoen, Alana Nelson, Kyla Pluemer, Talena Sprecher, Josie Laue, and Allison Durst. Those earning All State Award Silver medals are: Nick King, Carissa Willis, Elise Newkirk, Erica Steinmetz, Emma Coy, Kaylee Peterson, Maggie Gschwind, and Holly King. Finalist Award Bronze medals were awarded to Brooklyn Freestone and Logan Anderson. An Achievement Award Small Bronze medal was awarded to Caleb Birkrem.
Two Ithaca seniors earned perfect scores each year, which qualified them to achieve the special Gold Medallion. A round of applause to Brooklynn Granger and Emma Schoen on receiving that special award!
To all of our performers, we say “Very well done!” From Mrs. Murphey, Mrs. Thompson, Ms Schmitt, and Mrs. Zorea, we are so proud of all of you.

Students in grades 8-11. We will be working on next year's schedule with your teachers on Thursday morning. Please make sure you have your colored registration sheet completed and signed by a parent or guardian with you that day. There has been a section of Intro to Welding added to the schedule for 1st semester 3rd hour if anyone is interested. Seniors are not required to report until 9:00 a.m. that day. Please check in at the office when you get to school to let them know about your lunch choice if eating hot lunch. If you are able to come in a little early, you may be able to assist next year's 9th grade students with the scheduling process. Contact Ms. Bevan or Mrs. Kershner if interested.
The FFA would like to thank everyone who donated blood on Friday for the spring the blood drive. You blew away the goal we had set and we had 49 donations; 33 whole blood donations and 16 dual red cell donations. This is enough blood products to save up to 115 lives. Thank you so much for making this such a special event and giving the gift of life in honor of Ben.

This Day in History: April 12, 1981, The space shuttle Columbia is launched for the first time The space shuttle Columbia is launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, becoming the first reusable manned spacecraft to travel into space. Piloted by astronauts Robert L. Crippen and John W. Young, the Columbia undertook a 54-hour space flight of 36 orbits before successfully touching down at California’s Edwards Air Force Base on April 14.

DON'T FORGET! The Richland County and Community on Transition, (CCoT) will be presenting a virtual Transition Night on Wednesday, April 13 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with the Ithaca School District.
This presentation is geared for parents and guardians who have a child with a disability age 12 and beyond, who would like to learn more about services available as their child transitions from school to post-secondary options.
Are you asking questions such as, Will they get a job? Are they able to live on their own? What does transition mean? What housing options are there? What does long-term care mean for our family? These services include everything from living independently, to work experiences, to going to college, to going into the workforce.
You may join us even if you live outside of Richland County, as these services are not exclusive. Feel free to join us at the Ithaca School District LMC if you do not have adequate internet access or a device.
