This Day in History On October 25, 1944, during the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, the Japanese deploy kamikaze ("divine wind") bombers against American warships for the first time. It will prove costly-to both sides. This decision to employ suicide bombers against the American fleet at Leyte, an island of the Philippines, was based on the failure of conventional naval and aerial engagements to stop the American offensive. Declared Japanese naval Capt. Motoharu Okamura: "I firmly believe that the only way to swing the war in our favor is to resort to crash-dive attacks with our planes.... There will be more than enough volunteers for this chance to save our country."
Word of Day Sepulchre, noun SEP-ul-ker, is an old-fashioned word for a tomb or other place of burial. // A group of archaeologists discovered an ancient sepulchre filled not only with the bones of deceased people but also their apparently beloved pets.

This Day in History: On October 24, 1901, a 63-year-old schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor became the first person to successfully take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Between 1901 and 1995, 15 people went over the falls; 10 of them survived. Among those who died were Jesse Sharp, who took the plunge in a kayak in 1990, and Robert Overcracker, who used a jet ski in 1995. No matter the method, going over Niagara Falls is illegal, and survivors face charges and stiff fines on either side of the border.

This Day in History: Oct 14 1964-African American civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent resistance to racial prejudice in America, In 1955 he organized the first major protest of the civil rights movement: the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott. In 1963, he led his massive March on Washington, in which he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" address. In 1964, the civil rights movement achieved two of its greatest successes; the ratification of the 24th Amendment, which abolished the poll tax, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited racial discrimination in employment and education and outlawed racial segregation in public facilities.
