Sticker Shock is a national campaign to reduce underage drinking by limiting youth access to alcohol. The campaign is designed to discourage adults from buying alcohol for minors by educating them about the dangers and consequences of these actions. We'll enjoy a complimentary Kelly's drink, sponsored by Partners 4 Prevention Coalition, hand out certificates to area businesses that passed the most recent compliance checks, and place stickers around the alcoholic section of Eastside BP. Word of the Day: Bombast, noun, refers to speech or writing that is meant to sound important or impressive but that is not sincere or meaningful. The other world leaders at the international conference had little interest in being subjected to the host president's bombast. This Day in History: On January 18, 1919, in Paris, France, some of the most powerful people in the world meet to begin the long, complicated negotiations that would officially mark the end of the First World War. HÀNH Leaders of the victorious Allied powers-France, Great Britain, the United States and Italy-would make most of the crucial decisions in Paris over the next six months. For most of the conference, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson struggled to support his idea of a "peace without victory" and make sure that Germany, the leader of the Central Powers and the major loser of the war, was not treated too harshly. On the other hand, Prime Ministers Georges Clemenceau of France and David Lloyd George of Britain argued that punishing Germany adequately and ensuring its weakness was the only way to justify the immense costs of the war. In the end, Wilson compromised on the treatment of Germany in order to push through the creation of his pet project, an international peacekeeping organization called the League of Nations. Attention SENIORS: Please stop in the office and let us know the way you would like your name to appear in the yearbook. Word of the Day: A charlatan is a person who pretends to know or be something in order to deceive people. Some people thought he was a great leader, but others saw him as just a charlatan. This Day in History: Jan 17, 2893–On the Hawaiian Islands, a group of American sugar planters under Sanford Ballard Dole overthrow the Hawaiian monarch and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president. The first known settlers of the Hawaiian Islands were Polynesian voyagers who arrived sometime in the eighth century, and in the early 18th century the first American traders came to Hawaii to exploit the islands’ sandalwood, which was much valued in China at the time. In the 1830s, the sugar industry was introduced to Hawaii and by the mid-19th century had become well established. American missionaries and planters brought about great changes in Hawaiian political, cultural, economic, and religious life, and in 1840 a constitutional monarchy was established, stripping the Hawaiian monarch of much of his authority. Four years later, Sanford B. Dole was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to American parents. Birthdays: Elementary: Kannon Jones MS/HS: none
