During March, athletic trainers across America are being recognized for their commitment to helping athletes prevent injuries while staying healthy and active. As health care professionals, they are highly educated and dedicated to their mission. We appreciate our trainers -- Lindsay Tollakson (left) and Brianna Hampton (right) -- for their positive impact on our area athletes and teams and the countless hours they put into caring for our community. Of note, recently, Ithaca approved to expand the amount of time Lindsay and her colleagues are available to our athletes, becoming better able to assist them.

March 5-11, 2023 is National School Social Work Week, an opportunity for schools,
communities, and partners to acknowledge and recognize the impactful work they do to support students, families, and their communities.
Under the leadership of the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA), the only national organization exclusively dedicated to the profession of school social work, this celebration will emphasize School Social Work contributions of focusing on the “whole-child”, linking families to community resources, a valuable voice as part of the school’s multi-disciplinary team, and advocating for the profession of School Social Work.
The theme for National School Social Work Week 2023 is “We Rise.” During the school year, School Social Workers are confronted with challenges, heightened anxieties, and anticipated difficulties. However, School Social Workers face these challenges with strength and resilience. School Social Workers rise up - supporting their students, families, and school communities. School Social Workers rise to share hope. They rise to listen and understand. They rise to challenge inequities. They rise to support all students.
"School Social Workers are humble professionals,” said Rebecca Oliver, LMSW, SSWAA Executive Director, “who often are the voice for students and families but do not always voice the value they add to the school community. School Social Workers rise to support the growing need for mental health services, offering hope for students and families who face various challenges, and advocating for marginalized youth.”

Word of the Day: Ersatz, adjective, describes a usually artificial and inferior substitute or imitation. Her snootier peers never forgave her for attending the gala in an ersatz mink coat.
This Day in History: In 1834, Dred Scott, an enslaved man, had been taken to Illinois, a free state, and then Wisconsin territory, where the Missouri Compromise of 1820 prohibited slavery. Scott lived in Wisconsin with his master, Dr. John Emerson, for several years before returning to Missouri, a slave state. In 1846, after Emerson died, Scott sued his master’s widow for his freedom on the grounds that he had lived as a resident of a free state and territory. He won his suit in a lower court, but the Missouri supreme court reversed the decision. Scott appealed the decision. In the view of the nation’s highest court, under no condition did Dred Scott have the legal right to request his freedom. The Supreme Court’s verdict further inflamed the irrepressible differences in America over the issue of slavery, which in 1861 erupted with the outbreak of the American Civil War.

How many members are involved nationally at the high school level? A: approximately 210,000
